I need more time!
I wish I had a few hours in the day!
I am not getting to everything!
Where is all my time going?
Any of this sound familiar? I know I have said all of these things before, I think it comes with the territory of trying to juggle work and mom life. Our to do lists grow as our children do and if we don’t keep up, we find ourselves feeling completely overwhelmed, desperately searching for a few more hours in the day!
Time blocking may be the solution to helping you manage your time.
What is time blocking?
It is exactly what it sounds like, blocking out time in your day to do certain things. If you work from home (with or without kids) this method will work really well for you during the day.
How does time blocking work?
You start each day with time blocked out in your diary for certain things, it works best if you get specific with the task. For example, if you have to work on invoices, set one hour to do your invoices. Be clear on the start and end time and block out the time for one task.
So many of us try to do a million things at once, often due to necessity but the end result leaves us frazzled and often things are left undone on our to do lists.
Avoid blocking out time for “admin” because this is too general, invoices may be a part of this but without a clear plan you may never get to the invoices. If you have a lot of admin to do assign blocks to each section of the admin.
The more specific you are the more likely you are to achieve your goals for the day. Finishing one task at a time properly will also make you feel more motivated because you will be achieving something in those time blocks.
You can also apply this to cleaning your home. Instead of trying to clean everything everyday, block out time to clean certain areas on certain days. Once you have set the time blocks, make sure the end times are clear and then stick to them.
Have you tried time blocking before, how did it work?
